Spring/Summer 2003

The same basic trends have been prevailing for the past few seasons with a few additions here and there. It is either extremely popular with the masses or designers are simply running out of ideas! However a few welcoming changes can be spotted along with some bizarre styles that’ll hopefully be a distant memory (soon!).

Hooded jackets with matching pants are still hugely popular but velour has been replaced with terry cotton to be more compatible with the summer heat. You can either wear it as a set, or you can be a little more creative and mix n' match separate pieces. The pants are cut either straight in a comfy track pants style or hip hugging to flatter your booty.  The season’s most popular color choices are white, pastels and bright summer hues.

Multi-pocketed cargo pants, the runway darling has hit just about every store in town from Sears to SAKS. Cargo pants which are now available satin and leather can be dressed down with a short tank and summer sandals or dressed up with a girly top, school boy blazer and stilettos.

Summer tops are either well fitted or loose, either way the styles are very feminine and come in silk prints, sheer georgettes, and commonly accented with embroider. Shirts have a new twist to them — buttoned half way down with sleeves folded and held up with a button.

Jeans as always is still a fashion favorite with endless variety in style — faded, embroidery, glasswork, patched, all equally favored. As for color any shade of denim blue works, but absolutely no other colors please.

Slip dresses in varying lengths made in light weight fabrics, in simple flattering cuts is a very practical choice for evenings out, barbeques or even a day of shopping.

Designers' continue to be in love with lustrous fabrics which are delicately cut to create styles that do little less than amplify sexy curves and nothing beats gorgeous summer bronzed skin under flowing satin or peek-a-boo georgette. The color palette offers a nice mix but white is still the uncontested winner or summer. As Ji Baek, owner of Rescue Beauty Lounges in New York City puts it - "Something about white makes everyone look clean. Even the people looking at you feel cool. It's like air-conditioning".

Bold jewelry, like wooden bangles, long dangling earrings, huge pendants and rings compliment this season’s simple styles well. More Grace Kelly than Grace Jones, sums up the look when it s\comes to sunglasses as it feminine, rather than ferocious. Limited edition athletic shoes in flashy suede with luxurious details are racing in and out of stores while ballet shoes have taken center stage with ladylike bows or athletic accents. There is a new design in town, a crossbreed shoe with a lace up front and stiletto backed heels, exactly what outfit would compliment this pointless style is yet to be uncovered.

So there you have it the season summed up, just remember to pick what you like in accordance to your individual style, don't let fashion dictate you.

Summer fashion has one integral rule and that is fun, casual, and comfy. Ok so that's technically three but it really comes down to carefree style. It is the kind of look that takes you from beach volleyball straight to a luau. This season malls across the country have been seen stacked with mini, micro short shorts, is comfy stretch fabrics and vibrant 'happy' colors that are bright enough to coordinate with your favorite summer cocktails yet at the same time mildly muted so as to not clash with that beaming big star.

The rest of the fashion palette comprises of a  pleasant variation of sundresses, and everyone's favorite capri and handkerchief/bandana tops.

This season's entire look comes together nicely with tennis shoes, flip flops, or slip on mules.

This season, fashion itself went through a huge 'make over', the look transitioned from structured clothes and fitted tops of past seasons to lose flimsy, ethnic inspired clothes that simply demand comfort.  The colors this season are also less formal with that in mind 'black' has taken to the back seat; it's know substituted by various shades of brown. Country western inspired  fringe styles can be seen (every where!) hanging from belts, bags,  jackets & so on. SZ's very own Fashion/Style Correspondent takes us to an in-depth look at the best of Fall/Winter... read on....

Suede, fur, and old-world embroidery are the key words that best describe Fall/Winter fashion 2002. The runways are alive with rich colors, ornate prints, exquisite embroidery, beading and lacings. The bohemian look of Spring/ Summer is still very much alive, a definite folkloric allure is present in almost every designer's line. Here are  some of the major fashion cravings for your wardrobe this season, translated from the runways of major fashion capitals of the world, to reality:

CLOTHES

The most important addition to this season's wardrobe, is the all important coat. I haven't seen so much variety in style in one key garment in a long time.  Jackets in all shapes, colors and styles are flooding the malls nation wide. Leather is extremely popular, as is suede; Faux-fur and fringe trimmings are very in. Colors are rich, the look glamorous. The length is strictly a matter of preference.  The design most popularly sported, is a combination of two fabrics of contrasting texture. For e.g. a leather body with wool sleeves. Or a wool jacket with patterns cut in velvet in the front. As for casual wear, you can't go wrong with track pants with matching jackets in one solid color in velour. It's a popular look in Hollywood and the rest of us are catching on big time. It ranks high in comfort and hides a multitude of figure flaws (couch-potatoes your prayer's have been answered). Hoods, especially with faux trim are commonly worn for both style and practicality.
Another must-have this season is a chunky sweater in any fall shade: gold, sage, russet, all
shades of brown from camel to rich coffee (so go on, splurge & buy 2 or more).  Turtle necks are common and pair well with slim fitting jackets. The staple color of a lot of wardrobes - black is almost out. It has it's devotees, but it's not a big thing and few designers are working with it. One exception is the classic black leather jacket and black velvet pants - a new addition for winter evenings.

Denim has survived the past seasons and is still popular. But the basic blue jeans is not so basic any more. It comes accessorized with tasseled belts or embroidery. It may be faded at the seat or the front of the thighs. It is not always 100% cotton now. They are adding a small percentage of lycra or other stretchy fabric, makes it so much more comfortable. The cut is slim, waistlines are dangerously low, as low as you dare! Very recently, high waists are  making a come back in some runways, but the trend hasn't become reality. So stick to your low waists, much more figure flattering. Another key piece to your wardrobe this season is the ever so essential selection of  slim pants in deeper shades of beige. They work very well with sweaters in the rich fall colors. Corduroy is also becoming popular. Pants are smooth lined and fit snug at your hips and are made in comfy stretch fabrics.

S h o e s: Boots are still very popular; short ones, tall ones, high & low ones have it any way you like it; as long as it's a snappy pair of  Boots. Its the kind of   shoes that can take you everywhere...from day, to straight through the night; just as long as you pick the right pair

ACCESSORIES: In perfect tune with fall clothes, shoes, purses, belts are in suede, suede and more suede.  Purses with tassels are all the rage and ever store has them. Straps are kept short, falls a few inches below your arms.  Belts have been back for a couple of seasons now after a long hibernation. But the plain leather styles are saved only for the boys. For girls, it's suede with tassels again or stones or thin chains hung low around the hipsScarves are long yards that you can wrap once or even twice over the neck. The popular rose or purple tinted glasses of spring/summer are long gone, they are replaced by huge glasses in dark shades. Jewelry is popular in bohemian styles. Absolutely no metal, anything in wood, stone or leather will do. Turquoise and amber stones are a hit as are wooden or bead bangles. While necklaces are held by narrow leather straps. This season, it's all about bold accessories, in chunky bright colored stones and loads of girly beads.... the look is simple yet flashy at the same time Gypsy Inspired  : Not too overly intricate designs in earth tones & marine hues

HAIR  The sultriest hair and make-up that looks like it's  been slept in, loved in, and otherwise lived in, is the trend this season. Stick, straight, flat, hair is gone, (thank god!).  Wear it long or short, straight or curly, but 'new' the look this season calls for plenty of volume and movement. Mess is a lot sexier than fuss.  Precise make- up and a stiff hair do ends up looking too newscaster-ish and is only suitable for the boardroom. The best cut to go for this season is Layered cuts that work very well for this season's tousled look.MAKE-UP is rich, and strong for fall. Eyes are smoky, but not in traditional black or grays but in shades of chocolate, bronze or sage. Hues that are  definitely more wearable. Deep plum, charcoal or moss green powders are popular for lining the eyes. Smoky eyes teamed with pale, glossy lips and subtle blush is a popular evening look. Or you could go for rich lips in amber, burgundy or berry tones and simple eyesNAILS are kept short and painted in deep, rich shades. Metallic finishes are hot in both lips and nails.

These are the current trends for Fall/ Winter this year. My personal mantra is adapt what you like and toss out what you don't. After all, your tastes and personality should dictate your style, fashion should never dictate you.

FALL 2001Say Bah bye to sunny summer days and sexy tank tops :-( but cheer up now cause this Fall it's all about hip, sassy, and glamorous styles. (gone are the days of pretty in pink, sweet, girly girl, soft floral feminine flare).
Fall 2001 brings about deep rich hues and kick ass style all  wrapped up in a neat package that spells out funk, flare and of course S T Y L E.

The Look in...

  • make-up: deep n' matt, smoky eyes and rich matt lips ........the subtle n' sheer look  is sooo last year it’s the season for color (blend in with the deep rich hues of maple leaves and) and when it comes to your perfectly manicured tips, deep intense colors are the way to go.

  • hair: deep and rich is all that for your “mane” glory (that’s if your thinking of changing your hue) and as for the “do”,  tied back and sleek is best (breezy walks in the park call for something a little more “pulled together”) sleek hair do’s also highlight and show of hip deep rich hair shades.

  • clothes: Fall’ crazy  in love with leather, it’s classic, looks great on preety much everyone, and it’s versatile  (formal, causal, or corporate, you can always make leather work, to fit the occasion) long Jackets, Boots (with tiny heals and NOT platforms this time round), pants, etc…..(well you get the idea) and among other fashion flares, sweaters, hats, gloves and other fuzzy wazzies can be stylish and very and necessary for some.
    This season also brings back
DENIM in a brand new way (another classic way to go)

Summer Farewells:                    &                               Fall Keepers:

the stuff to keep and the stuff to pack up from last reason

Bandanas, glimmer eye shadows, & bronzers,
(bronzers emphases/give the illusion of a ‘tan’;
so, no sun = no tan,) faking a tan looks hot when it
could be realistically possible
short shorts (face it goose bumps are not sexy)
same goes for
flip lops/sandals (ice blue toes come
on know, here’s an equation: sandals = sandy beaches,
&  boots = twigs, dry leaves and eventual snow)
as for, hair you might want to ditch the light
streaks
and
highlights (if you’ve had it done), fall usually means
not much sun (that big bright star naturally highlights hair),
so if you don’t have natural streaks and
highlights, it might look fake)

Jeans, Caprice (dark) can look stylish and casual paired up with

sweat shirt  & trainers,
Tanks tops to wear under jackets

(bright red tanks under black showing just a bit of crimson
'V' under
all the black)
Sun Screen yes! you can get sun burnt even in

fall when the sun might be shy........
Aloe Gel this green gue

not only soothes sunburns but itchy red dry skin too

fall must haves: moisturizer, lotion, elbow grease, (ok okay I think you get the picture), try body butters from
"The Body Shop" herbal tea (flu soother/remedy specially lemon & honey based) look for it in health food stores, boots & at least one totally awesome jacket (jackets are perfect for fickle Fall hot one minute and cold the other, no problem, take it off or layer up..........(you can change your mood with mother nature)
